Exhibition catalogue for portuguese transdisciplinary artist Tatiana Macedo, who works across the expanded fields of installation, photography, cinema and sound. Macedo’s artistic practice consistently explores themes such as memory, identity, migration, and the subtle dynamics of human perception within institutional spaces.
What is Unspoken
As part of her residency at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, What Is Unspoken emerges as both a continuation of her broader practice and a deep exploration of new territories, reflecting her commitment to engaging with everyday life through an immersive, observational lens.
To accompany the exhibition, we worked together with the artist on developing an artist book both retrospective and forward-looking, structured in three key sections.
The first section comprises a series of critical essays that delve into the core themes present in Macedo’s work, such as the ongoing investigation of institutional spaces and how individuals interact with them, a theme that remains central to the artist’s artistic inquiry.
The second section showcases a selection from Macedo’s extensive archive of photography—an ongoing visual diary that is constantly being built in parallel to her major projects. These photographs capture fleeting, often overlooked moments in everyday life, emphasizing a distinctive way of seeing and documenting the world, often highlighting the unspoken or invisible dynamics in social interactions and environments.
The final part of the book presents an in-depth conversation between Macedo and the exhibition’s curator, Emanuele Guidi. This dialogue offers insight into the conceptual framework behind What Is Unspoken, revealing how the project took gradually took shape during her residency.
