Ellipsis is a self-initiated summer school, art residency and temporary community in the south of Portugal. Each year in September, 10–15 people — artists, designers, illustrators, writers, architects, urban planners, activists, from countries as diverse as the US, Canada, Holland, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Japan, and Azerbaijan — meet for 10 days and share a countryside house in the south of Portugal.

Together they are responsible for creating a programme of activities comprising of lectures, workshops, screenings, hikes, etc., teaching and learning from each other, while also exploring their surroundings and getting to know the local community.

The project aims to explore the possibilities for community creation in the fringes, away from the urban cultural centres, as well as what happens when a group of strangers come together and share a space and a common interest — that of rethinking what collaboration, education and community means nowadays.

Ellipsis was born out of an ongoing investigation into topics such as community, collaboration, education and knowledge as tools to counter isolation, and as a way to offer an alternative to the individualism that's encouraged too often by the technologies and systems that make up our reality.
